Understanding Travel & Visitors

Understanding Travel Medical Insurance

Travel medical insurance is designed to help cover unexpected illnesses, injuries, and medical emergencies that occur while traveling away from your home country. It is intended for temporary travel and visitor situations and should not be considered a substitute for comprehensive major medical health insurance.

Not ACA-Compliant Coverage

This travel medical insurance is not Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliant health insurance and does not provide all benefits required under the Affordable Care Act. It does not qualify as Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) and should not be relied upon as a replacement for individual or employer-sponsored health insurance coverage. Individuals should consult their tax or legal advisor regarding any ACA-related requirements.

Pre-Existing Conditions

Travel medical insurance generally does not cover pre-existing medical conditions. A pre-existing condition is typically any illness, injury, disease, or medical condition that existed before the effective date of coverage, whether diagnosed or not. Certain plans may provide limited coverage for a sudden and unexpected acute onset of a pre-existing condition, subject to age restrictions, policy terms, and benefit limitations.

Coverage Limitations

Coverage is subject to:

  • Policy maximums and benefit limits
  • Deductibles and cost-sharing requirements
  • Eligibility requirements
  • Medical necessity determinations
  • Policy exclusions and restrictions
  • Geographic coverage limitations
  • Age-based benefit limitations

Benefits vary by plan selected and are not guaranteed for every medical condition or treatment.

Common Exclusions

Coverage may not be available for:

  • Routine checkups and preventive care
  • Most pre-existing conditions
  • Pregnancy, routine maternity, and childbirth expenses
  • Mental health treatment
  • Cancer treatment
  • Substance abuse treatment
  • Cosmetic procedures
  • Experimental or investigational treatments
  • Infertility treatments
  • Elective medical procedures
  • Treatment sought for known conditions prior to travel

Please review plan documents carefully for complete exclusions.

Claims Process

If medical treatment is needed:

  1. Seek appropriate medical care.
  2. Retain all itemized bills, receipts, and medical records.
  3. Submit claims and supporting documentation to the insurance administrator.
  4. Additional medical records or information may be requested.
  5. Claims are reviewed according to policy terms, conditions, and exclusions.

Payment of claims is not automatic and is subject to policy eligibility and benefit determination.

Eligibility Requirements

Acceptance and eligibility vary based on:

  • Age
  • Country of residence
  • Travel destination
  • Visa status
  • Length of travel
  • Medical history
  • Plan-specific underwriting requirements

Certain travelers, visa categories, destinations, or age groups may have reduced benefits, eligibility restrictions, or may not qualify for coverage.

Important Reminder

Travel medical insurance is intended to provide protection against unexpected medical emergencies while traveling. It is not designed to cover every healthcare need and should be reviewed carefully before purchase. Coverage, benefits, exclusions, and limitations vary by policy and carrier.

Please refer to the policy certificate and Description of Coverage for complete terms, conditions, exclusions, and limitations.
